Disability Employment Services client, Raymond, had a tough life growing up. He was homeless from the age of six and he learnt to fend for himself throughout his childhood. This largely affected his social skills and mental health in later years.
His mental health was taking over him, leading him down the path of substance abuse. He lived in a burnt down building by himself and relied on public transport to get from A-to-B. He decided this is not the life he wanted to live.
He was looking to make a change in his life, so he entered the doors of atWork Australia in Cranbourne, Victoria. He was met with many smiling faces, one of which would be his future Job Coach, Shukriya.
Within Raymond’s initial consultation, Shukriya utilised this time to get to know Raymond, his past and what he wants in his future. It was within this appointment that they discussed his mental health and how that affects him.
Raymond was embarrassed to discuss his mental health, but Shukriya reminded him of the importance of this and encouraged him to discuss his feelings. She referred him to his GP for further discussions.
Shukriya and In-Work Support Coach, Lauren, continued to check in with Raymond to ensure he was comfortable, safe and confident; both inside and outside of his scheduled appointments.
They regularly called Raymond to ensure that he was on track.
Prior to coming into the office, Raymond had a potential job opportunity lined up, he just needed the assistance to get there, which is just what the Cranbourne team did.
The pair also assisted in creating a resume, provided financial assistance through public transport cards (Myki) and purchased him a phone. All of which, assisted Raymond to get safely getting to and contacting future employers.
Raymond was offered the position as a full time Dismantler in a local automotive company. He is over the moon to be back at work, after 20 years of unemployment. He feels important once again and has a purpose in life.
