Bernard (58) moved to Wollongong when he lost his role after the company he was working for collapsed. He found himself homeless and in a cycle that was difficult to break.
He was finding the process of actively seeking employment disheartening and depressing. He believed his age and situation were his biggest barriers to employment. However, through it all he never lost his positive outlook that eventually things would pick up.
Bernard’s Job Coach, Jaime, identified an opportunity for him to participate in a new program ‘jobs atWork’ aimed at supporting clients during the transition to Workforce Australia.
Here Bernard met another of the atWork Australia team members, Employer Engagement Coordinator, Sandra.
Sandra knew of a factory role she thought would be suitable for Bernard and within two days he was connected with his new employer and a full-time role as a factory hand.
atWork Australia supported Bernard with his White Card and the appropriate personal protective equipment he would need for his new role.
“The experience with atWork Australia has been very positive and welcoming from the get-go. They are very proactive with calls for referrals and suitable vacancies,” said Bernard.
Bernard was surprised but proud of himself when he was offered the role.
