At sixty-three years of age, Ahmed had been unemployed for eight months; although, he was still eager to find meaningful employment. Ahmed migrated to Australia from Lebanon after completing his sixth year of schooling. When he arrived in Australia, he needed to start working to help support his family. As a result of this, Ahmed has had limited opportunities to increase his education.
Ahmed has had multiple jobs throughout his life, often having to change jobs due to different health concerns. Ahmed decided he needed additional support to find work and that’s when he reached out to atWork Australia’s Disability Employment Service team at the Canterbury Bankstown office.
When Ahmed met his Job Coach, Ziad, he shared that he was managing multiple health issues, including kidney disorder and arthritis, among other health concerns. Although there were no mutual obligations, Ahmed advised he was eager to start work so he could be earning an income.
Ziad was able to help Ahmed to find a new job. However, after a while the work began impacting Ahmed’s existing back injury. Ahmed did not want to complain, as he feared he would lose his job. Ziad explained that the work was not suitable and discussed options for alternative employment.
With the support of his Job Coach, Ahmed took a brave step and resigned from his job and entered self-employment, as a Driver. Ahmed remained self-employed for six months and then with Ziad’s assistance, Ahmed was able to secure another driving role, doing school drop offs and pickups.
Ahmed’s Job Coach, Ziad, said, “Ahmed’s journey with atWork Australia has been successful. His confidence has increased, and he has achieved his employment goals.” Ahmed was thrilled with the service and support he received from Ziad. So much so, he referred his wife to atWork Australia.
This is a great outcome for Ahmed, his story shows that with the right attitude and support he was able to achieve his employment goals.
