From Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Alexia has an acquired brain injury and faces ongoing challenges of PTSD, as well as brain fog and memory loss.

She was connected with atWork Australia on the Gold Coast and met her Job Coach, Dani. Alexia was on medical exemptions, however, Dani would check-in with her periodically to see if she was ready to engage in any activities, short courses or job searching.

Over the time that Alexia and Dani built their relationship, they discussed goals and interests to help formulate a tailored plan that would set Alexia on her journey.

Alexia was finding it challenging to manage her health; she lacked confidence. But once she decided what she wanted to do, her motivation and positivity changed her outlook on life.

Alexia mentioned that she would like to work in hotel reception; she was determined.

Thus, Dani helped Alexia enrol in a Certificate III in Business Admin. The course helped Alexia build her confidence; it allowed her to prove to herself that she was capable of working. The course gave Alexia the confidence that she could remember the new things she was learning.

Alexia completed the course while she was doing volunteer work, and also drove an Uber.

Since completing her Certificate III, Alexia has been employed at the hotel Mantra on View. During the interview, she was honest with the employer about her barriers, and since being employed, they have been supportive and excellent.

With the support Alexia has received from Dani and her employer, she has been able to reach her goals – both inside and outside the workplace. One of these goals included, booking a solo trip to New York.

In only a short time with Mantra on View, Alexia won Employee of the Month in the inaugural celebration. The vote was unanimous; her manager and colleagues all voted for her because of her work ethic and the positive attitude she brings to work every day.

“Alexia reached her personal goals which motivated her to make further positive changes in her life. It gave her a feeling of hope.”
