Ali has found a job with flexible hours and can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel after 7 months out of work.
Ali approached atWork Australia after struggling to find employment due to chronic pain and poor health. Ali was left with little motivation about finding work after months trying to find the right job for him. This all changed when he joined the atWork Australia Chester Hill office in late 2018.
His Job Coach, Gaurav, could see Ali’s motivation to turn things around and gain a job, so she started by focusing on his strengths.
“Ali does have some physical limitations, but I knew we could work around these and look at his individual qualities, such as his persistence and his sense of commitment to a positive outcome,” he said.
Gaurav began his coaching by looking at ways in which he could boost Ali’s motivation. Together they worked out that Ali was interested in flexible working hours, to allow him to work around his chronic pain. They also wanted to upgrade his skills so that he had a positive story to tell potential employers.
In between their weekly appointments Ali completed a first aid course and he also obtained a national police check. They updated and reworked his resume and worked on his job-seeking and interview skills. By this time Ali was beginning to believe in himself more and could see his situation improving. He had hope for the future for the first time in months.
Then, as Gaurav anticipated, a job as a general hand came up near to Ali’s home. He applied and was successful at interview, experiencing a wave of relief and appreciation. He felt grateful to Gaurav for being so supportive and positive through their journey together.
“I enjoy having flexible work hours and am appreciative of Gaurav’s efforts,” Ali said.
