Alona entered the atWork Australia Dapto, New South Wales office as a Workforce Australia client seeking assistance on her journey to employment.
Since moving to Australia, Alona has been a principal carer of her children which has made it difficult to find a position that catered to her needs, whilst also being a position that she enjoys.
Once entering the atWork Australia doors in Dapto, she was met with her Job Coach, Mary. Mary got to know Alona, what her past was, her employment history and what her ideal job would be so she could put together a plan.
It was in this initial appointment that Alona told Mary that she travels everywhere via public transport, which hinders her ability to travel far. As a result, she was seeking a position that was nearby. Mary took note and ensured Alona that she would source local jobs.
Alona also highlighted that she would like to work in hospitality, so Mary suggested enrolling in a Certificate III in Hospitality through local RTO provider, the National College Vocational Education. This would give Alona a recognised qualification whilst also gaining valuable skills.
Whilst completing this certificate, she also communicated regularly with the atWork Australia in-house wellness team to ensure she was confident in her abilities moving forward. In addition, Mary and Alona had additional one- on- one appointments to further build on her confidence of returning to work.
Within weeks of having her Certificate lll, she was successful in a job interview with a local coffee shop. Alona was ecstatic and could not wait until her first day. This is her first ever position in Australia.
Alona has overcome a lot of personal barriers throughout her journey to employment. Mary and the team in Dapto were overjoyed they were there to assist her and, witness her increase in selfconfidence and independence as a result of her new position.
