Workforce Australia client, Mark, has worked hard on himself recently. His improved self-belief now has him starting his own business and helping others in his community.
After a tough life that included addiction and homelessness, Mark sought assistance from atWork Australia in Hindmarsh, SA, to gain meaningful employment.
Initially the team supported Mark with his health and wellbeing by connecting him to community services and providing access to counselling through atWork Australia’s Wellness Services.
Then, they supported Mark to reduce his job search, providing flexibility around his requirements when he needed it for his health, and assisted him with access to technology.
Mark told his Job Coach, Sona, that he re-gained a passion for art and painting during rehab and had done house painting in the past. He also shared that he was concerned about returning to work for an employer, in case potential co-workers impacted his recovery.
He also had an interest in volunteering in the art program at the local community centre to support people like him to recover.
Sona encouraged Mark to start his own painting business, which would provide him the flexibility to work on his artwork and volunteer, plus aid in his recovery by allowing him to choose the people he associated with.
Mark was very happy with all the support he has received from atWork Australia, from his anxiety phase to helping him to reactivate his ABN and feel like he could start his own business again.
“atWork Australia have been very supportive and I really appreciate the patience they have shown me. Along with the support through my dark phase to bring me to my bright phase,” said Mark.
Mark continues to be inspired to work with those who had been in the same situation as him and support them in making positive changes in their lives. His goal is to work full time as an artist one day.
