Brendan had spent some time travelling around Western Australia, he was looking for the right family who would be a good fit for him to live with. He found a safe and secure home in Albany and was helping his family look after his young niece.
After this tumultuous time in his life, he was ready to look for employment, but his self-confidence was low.
He was connected with atWork Australia’s Workforce Australia team and referred into our internal programs, Jobs for the Mob and Money Minded as a starting point. Jobs for the Mob is a pre-employment program to support clients to feel work ready within their communities. Money Minded supports clients to learn budgeting and financial skills they may not have previously learnt.
Within the pre-employment programs, Brendan met facilitator, Colleen.
“Brendan said it was eye opening to sit in on our courses and learn that others were in the same situation as him. Facing similar barriers and life stresses,” said Colleen.
Colleen quickly noticed Brendan’s people skills and asked him to assist with the courses, such as driving clients to a clothing store to purchase interview clothes, and supporting Colleen to round up clients who were a little slow to return after lunch.
These small responsibilities helped Brendan regain his confidence.
“I witnessed Brendan become more confident. He started engaging with everyone and was becoming more work ready.”
However, it was the moment that Brendan came into the office to show off his new work boots, work pants and interview clothing, purchased by atWork Australia, that the team could really see that Brendan had the confidence to start applying for interviews.
“Brendan looked a million bucks!” said Colleen.
“He said he has found that working with atWork Australia has made him more confident and driven to gain employment.”
The atWork Australia team is now looking forward to working with Brendan to identify his employment goals and to look at some industries he may be interested in working in.
