Workforce Australia client and stay-at-home mum, Chloe, reached out to the atWork Australia team in Gawler, South Australia, in July 2022 looking for support to find employment.
Chloe has been out of paid employment while looking after her children, and as a result had limited work experience.
Chloe lives with anxiety and depression, conditions that have been exacerbated by her stress and other barriers she faces returning to paid employment.
Chloe was connected with local Job Coach, Joanne, to support her through the challenges she faced. Joanne suggested that before looking for work, it was important that Chloe felt ready, so referred her to atWork Australia’s internal Wellness Services. It took a while for Chloe to agree, as she didn’t feel comfortable speaking with strangers, but eventually she agreed to utilise the support services. A choice she was happy she made as it really helped her social anxiety.
Chloe and Joanne continued their regular appointments and Chloe mentioned she wasn’t very tech savvy, however, really wanted to complete a qualification and upskill. Joanne enrolled her into a Certificate III in Community Services through Alffie.
Chloe was beginning to feel more confident, and as a result, felt ready to undertake some voluntary work to build her skills. She commenced a Work for the Dole program at the local Lifeline store in Gawler. She participated two days per week and was able to gain experience in customer service, money handling and how to use the cash register. The host has provided great feedback on Chloe’s progress and learning.
Through the one-on-one support offered by Joanne, Chloe has been able to overcome her barriers to employment and build her skills. The work experience has allowed her to add recent work experience to her resume, and she has gained the confidence to try new things.
Chloe is excited to continue putting goals into place and working with Joanne to secure paid employment when she feels ready.
