Craig is delighted to secure a job that is suitable for his physical limitations and is proving to be positively impacting his mental health.
Craig has been unemployed for the past 2 years. During this time, he has been working through his health barriers, being supported by atWork Australia’s Disability Employment Services team in Wanneroo, WA. It has been a difficult process for Craig, facing multiple setbacks because of his health barriers and positions not being suitable for his health conditions.
Craig lives with a spinal disorder, which in the past has made it difficult for him to find suitable employment, as there were certain tasks he could not perform. In addition to his spinal disorder, Craig experiences mental health concerns, such as anxiety and depression. His mental health condition was also impacting the type of work he could perform and it was making it difficult for him to sustain long term employment.
Throughout Craig’s journey with atWork Australia, the team continued to support him and worked tirelessly to identify a suitable position. Eventually, Craig secured a position as a Bus Driver with BusWest.
This position was perfect for Craig, it suited his physical limitations and was positively impacting his mental health. Craig loved the fact he could perform a role that was helping his community.
Now Craig is in employment, he is being supported by his In-Work Support Coach, Leanne. Leanne has been able to support Craig with challenges he has faced in the workplace, such as dealing with co-workers and challenging personalities. Leanne was able to act as a sounding board for Craig to process his emotions.
Craig worked closely with and was supported by the whole team at the Wanneroo office. He has been very appreciative of their on-going support. Craig said, “Employment has done wonders for my mental health. It was nice to feel so supported, it means a lot.”
Craig’s In-Work Support Coach, Leanne, said, “Craig was one of my first clients when I started with atWork Australia. I’ve been privileged enough to follow his journey. Where he has come from and where he is now is a completely different Craig. The positive growth has come from finding the right employment opportunity at the right time.”
Craig said, “I am pleased to be employed by BusWest. With my limitations, it’s the perfect job for me. I am looking forward to a long future at BusWest, maybe until retirement. My life has improved significantly. I am much happier than I have ever been.”
