Darren, a client of atWork Australia Corrimal, NSW, had worked in laboring and retail before making the decision to have a new start at the age of 52.
Darren was eager and motivated to work in the disability sector, however, had no experience in the industry. So, at his first appointment with his Job Coach, Storm, they developed an action plan on exactly what he wanted to do based on his career and life goals.
With his limited knowledge in the disability space, Storm organised a police check and Working with Children Check for Darren, as well as enrolling him in a Certificate III in Individual Support.
Darren’s journey was seamless, and he progressed very well. He was extremely motivated to get into the disability industry and was setting himself goals to achieve in between his fortnightly appointments with Storm.
Thus, Storm started the process of reaching out to employers in support work, to advocate on Darren’s behalf. Storm wanted to give Darren the best chance of finding employment and ensure that his application was not overlooked due to his lack of industry work experience.
With Storm’s support, Darren secured employment as a Support Worker; so far, he is enjoying his new job. atWork Australia will continue to monitor his employment and provide ongoing support for both Darren and the employer, to ensure both thrive.
