Good news from atWork Australia

Jereme recently celebrated his first full year of employment in Australia. Employment has meant a lot to Jereme and is a way he practices self-care by keeping himself mentally and physically active.

Jereme, originally from Sri Lanka, lives with depression, mood fluctuations and a musculo-skeletal disorder.

When he first started in Disability Employment Services with atWork Australia in Cranbourne, Victoria, he found it difficult to focus in work environments and had little work experience in Australia.

He had little motivation when he was first connected to his Job Coach, and now he is supported by In-Work Support Coach, Ramya, and working in sustainable employment.

“When I first met Jereme, I made it clear that his health was our priority and he needed to focus on his health and wellbeing to be successful in any employment setting,” said Ramya.

“We started off speaking about relaxation techniques and simple stretches for physical health.”

While Jereme had a slow start to finding employment, after continued appointments with Ramya, Jereme began to become more engaged.

Ramya and Jereme talked through employer expectations and how they could be managed alongside his health.

“I also spoke to Jereme about how we would continue to support him through In-Work Support once he started working. This way he knew we could help him with managing employer expectations and be successful in a role,” said Ramya.

With Ramya backing him for motivation, Jereme gained sustainable employment and is now working six days a week.

“Jereme realised self-care is a priority and he says working has helped him with his mental health by keeping him both mentally and physically active.”

“He said working has given him confidence and is helping him develop social interaction skills, and in turn is helping him develop friendships.”

“Jereme is now excited about his future; he tells me he wishes to work every day and be successful in his career and life.”

Jereme is still currently supported by Ramya through in In-Work Support even after completing one year in employment.

When we asked Jereme for a quote on his journey to employment he said, “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.”
