Eric had worked solidly as a spray painter for 26 years until COVID-19 hit. Like so many, Eric was left without a job and as Australia quickly moved into recession, employment prospects looked bleak.
However, Eric saw this as a good time for reflection and a rethink about where his career was at, and where else it could go.
In a career sea change of sorts, he decided to explore opportunities within the security sector as they were one of the few industries that saw growth through the time of COVID-19 rather than decline.
Eric connected with atWork Australia Shepparton and was encouraged by Disability Employment Services Job Coach Brad to train in the security industry to increase his chances of gaining work.
Not only did atWork Australia fund the course, but they assisted Eric with the essential steps to gain employment. These included, resume writing, a Working with Children Check, work clothing and the security licence itself.
As Job Coach Brad had garnered good connections with employers in the region, they were able to make contact with several security companies who were looking for reliable candidates.
With all of this in place, along with Eric’s strong drive to enter the workforce, Eric was offered employment six days after receiving his security licence.
As it turned out, more than one employer asked Eric to join their organisation and he is currently working two jobs.
Eric still receives on the job support through regular contact with his Job Coach Brad.
Eric remarked that he felt supported with atWork Australia from education through to employment.
Job Coach Brad said that he is “Very happy that Eric is enjoying his new career in the security industry and that he is able to afford new things and create a better life for himself and his family”.
