Jennifer started working with atWork Australia’s Campbelltown Disability Employment Services and her Job Coach, Karen, in 2019.
Having caring responsibilities for the past 19 years, Jennifer was ready to step back into employment.
Jennifer quickly learnt the job-searching landscape had changed in that time. She also had a spinal disorder and was unsure what kind of work would suit her physical barriers.
Together, Jennifer and Karen worked on a plan, including discussing Jennifer’s goals, interests, and hobbies, and looking at different types of roles that would interest Jennifer.
Karen taught Jennifer how to confidently search for jobs. She trailed a few jobs but discovered they didn’t suit her. So, Karen helped Jennifer look for other kinds of suitable work.
The atWork Australia team supported her with pre-employment checks and other work-related items such as a mobile phone and top-ups of her Opal card to get to and from interviews.
Through this process, Jennifer learnt she enjoyed getting out and about. She then expressed her interest in light cleaning roles due to the flexibility in work hours.
“Jennifer was very keen to find work to get out of the house. She was always engaging, positive, and very easy to work with,” said Karen.
She soon landed a cleaning role and said her employer has been very supportive, helping improve her self-confidence.
“Jennifer believes that finding work has helped her in many ways, such as being able to financially support her family and being able to treat herself. It has boosted her self-confidence and she feels good waking up every morning for work,” said Karen.
“She said it helped her feel better about herself, she can now go out to buy nice things to treat herself.”
“She is very happy that she’s found sustainable employment with a very supportive employer who is always willing to help and understand her.”
