Darren has been out of paid work for almost 10 years due to his mental health condition. Darren has been improving his health with support from medical professionals, however, it was his Job Coach that guided him back to paid work and finding a new opportunity.
Darren, 55, from Sunbury, Victoria, had been working in the automotive industry, however, over the past 10 years has not been able to work due to his mental health condition. During this time, he had been volunteering with the Salvation Army in the warehouse as a way of giving back to the community.
Darren reached out to atWork Australia for additional support and was connected with Job Coach, Vilda. Vilda spent a lot of time with Darren to hear more about, and understand, his circumstances, the support he required and the capacity he would be able to work. Darren was motivated to get back into paid employment again.
Vilda and Darren discussed previous work experience and his skills, identified his abilities and conducted mock interviews to encourage his confidence.
Darren was excited about any paid employment opportunity that Vilda presented. It was Vilda’s Service Manager, Jenny, that emailed a vacancy through and Vilda immediately thought that Darren had the right skills for the opportunity. They discussed the role and the duties, and despite the position being part-time, it was a good chance for Darren to build on his skills and be a part of a team.
Darren had an interview with Hearty Health, a food company specialising in nutritious pre-made meals, and after a trial was considered successful he was offered to start work. Darren has been employed since March 2021.
When Darren found out he had the job he was excited and appreciative for the opportunity. He was happy that Vilda had believed in him and his abilities.
Darren said “Vilda got the ball rolling right away and gave me a breath of fresh air”.

Darren has contributed greatly to his community through his volunteer work, however, being back in paid work has given him purpose and motivation.
