Brand new factory with quote "My employer is very flexible and understanding of my needs and provides the gear I need." said Adam DES ClientAdam is living with Asperger’s Syndrome. In addition, Adam had been unemployed for 18 months, due to several factors such as the Covid-19 pandemic, the Black Summer fires 2019/20 that raged through the community. These two significant events alone, meant there was the lack of employment opportunities with so many businesses and communities impacted.

Adam reached out to the team from atWork Australia Bairnsdale where he was introduced to his Job Coach Mandi. Through the initial discussions, Mandi had mentioned that Mallacoota Abalone was rebuilding after the devastation and loss of their previous premises due to the recent fires and were looking for staff. Mandi also explained, located in the remote seaside town in East Gippsland, Mallacoota Abalone is the largest employer in the region employing up to 50 staff. The company processes and trades live, frozen, and canned abalone, this successful company exports goods all throughout Asia and Canada.

Due to the bushfires and pandemic. Along with many other employers, Mallacoota Abalone had encountered huge shortages in workforce availability.  The remote nature of Mallacoota makes it unviable to commute from other towns, in addition, due to the fires and the rebuilding of homes and businesses, there is a shortage in accommodation in Mallacoota which is only adds to their woes.  With work available for an additional 15-20 casual process workers, and even further positions available once canning operations recommences in the new factory, Adam, was very keen to head straight there and hand in his resume.

From the start the team at Mallacoota Abalone was delighted with Adam’s determination and offered him a job there and then. They provided a brief history of the company and mentioned how their workplace was a place of inclusion having previously supported DES Clients.

Adam is a dream client, and I am so happy that he really enjoys his job with such a wonderful employer” – Mandi, Job Coach

Adam is enjoying his new role and is supported by his Job Support Coach Rebecca and Wendy from the Employer Engagement Team. He is in constant contact, and while he talks to the team regarding any concerns he may have, most of the time he discusses these directly with his manager who takes the time to listen about any concern Adam may have and provides a resolution. Adam is incredibly grateful for everyone’s support.
