When Daniel started working with atWork Australia in Booval, QLD, he had a goal to gain a skill in a trade. He wanted to work outside, have a trade, and gain a stable work life.

However, when Daniel first spoke to his Disability Employment Services Job Coach, Matthew, he felt that with his barriers, he would never reach this goal.

Daniel had been mostly unemployed for the last nine years and lives with an intellectual disability. This impacts his ability to learn new tasks, maintain task knowledge and can affect his productivity levels.

“Daniel’s barriers impacted his confidence and motivation. He had applied for many roles in the last nine years and was feeling defeated,” said Matthew.

Daniel and Matthew worked together to break up his long-term goal of working in a trade, into smaller achievable goals that would lead him to his long-term goal.

“We set his long-term goal, and then developed a mid-term goal and a short-term goal for Daniel,” said Matthew.

“His short-term goal was to find a traineeship to start building his skills and confidence and get him some experience back in the workplace.”

As they started looking at options, Daniel started to become more motivated and after a month of working with Matthew, he began to get excited about adding to his resume.

Daniel landed a Conservation Traineeship through Skilling Queenslanders for Work.

“Daniel has reinforced, strengthened and broadened his knowledge and skills during his time in the Conservation Traineeship,” said Matthew.

“He has had the right environment to grow and build his confidence.”

“The support I’ve gotten has helped me with making friends, connections, gaining skills and setting up employment opportunities for the future,” said Daniel.

His commitment to his traineeship was acknowledged during an internal awards event, where Daniel won an award for Excellent Attendance, Attitude, and Input.

“Gaining the award showed Daniel he was a valued trainee and worker, and validated that he could achieve his goals,” said Matthew.

Daniel is now well on his way to completing his mid-term goal of completing more training and experience in a trade.
