Gavin and his Job Coach. Gavin said, “I believe the support I have received from atWork Australia has had a positive impact on my success finding employment”

Employment can bring many benefits to a person’s life; financial security, purpose and an opportunity to connect with the community. This is exactly what Gavin experienced when he secured his new job. More importantly, employment gave Gavin an opportunity to regain his confidence and self-belief.

When Gavin first came to atWork Australia’s Chester Hill, NSW, office to get support from the Workforce Australia team, he was connected with his Job Coach, Bibi. Gavin presented with low confidence, which was having a significant impact on his ability to secure long term employment. Gavin was facing some personal challenges and he had limited family support. He was feeling hopeless, tired and that he was never good enough for any employer, so he never tried to find work. Bibi reassured Gavin that she could see potential in him and with a little hard work, the right support and guidance, she believed that he could find suitable employment.

Gavin had a limited employment history, because of this, he was unsure of what he could do or where to even start looking for work. Gavin’s Job Coach, Bibi, reminded him that he was not alone and that atWork Australia were here to support him at every stage of his employment journey. As a starting point, Bibi wanted to create Gavin a new resume so they could begin approaching potential employers.

Now Gavin was equipped with his new resume, Bibi referred him to atWork Australia’s Employer Engagement team, who could provide further support to engage with local employers. Soon enough, the team came across an opportunity they believed would be perfect for Gavin; a trolley collector at a local supermarket. Initially, Gavin was not confident and had some hesitations about putting himself forward for this position. However, his Job Coach, Bibi, worked closely with him to build his motivation and helped develop his interview skills. Most importantly, Bibi reassured Gavin, that regardless of the outcome of the interview, she would still be there to support him and that just attending the interview would help him to gain experience.

Gavin was successful in gaining employment and ended up working in that role for the next six months. Unfortunately, through no fault of his own, Gavin’s employment ended. Again, this really impacted on Gavin’s confidence. Although, on the bright side, Gavin discovered that he really enjoyed that position and was interested in pursuing similar roles.

Gavin and his Job Coach, Bibi, began searching and applying for similar roles. In the meantime, Bibi continued to support Gavin, helping him to take positive steps to improve his confidence and overall employability skills. Gavin was feeling empowered and full of self-belief. Just recently, Gavin has received the good news of another job offer and is currently waiting on a start date. Gavin’s Job Coach, Bibi, said, “I am so proud of the progress Gavin has made. I enjoyed working closely with him to support him on his employment journey.”

“I believe the support I have received from atWork Australia has had a positive impact on my success finding employment,” said Gavin.
