Luke was referred to atWork Australia when he was 19 years old. He had just completed his Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) with Verney Road School in Shepparton however, he had no employment history apart from a few unpaid labouring roles.
atWork Australia Job Coach Scott built rapport with Luke while discussing his career aspirations, skills, experiences and strengths. With this knowledge, Scott was able to assist Luke with identifying realistic employment options and it was soon established that a work trial involving physical labour would be the best way forward.
Scott made contact with GV Custom Kerbing, a company that specialises in concrete kerbs for roads and gardens. After confirming that this was a supportive, inclusive organisation that understood Disability Employment Services, Scott negotiated a work trial with the company with the addition of a wage subsidy, which would ensure that both client and employer were sufficiently supported, and sustainable employment was achievable.
Within the space of two months, the work trial soon led to part-time employment with GV Custom Kerbing. Job Coach Scott organised work clothing and equipment to make sure that Luke was ready for work.
Despite it being a very quick transition for Luke, from his initial consultation to his first day of his job, Luke adapted to working life well through the good support around him.
Job Coach Scott said, “He coped well as I kept in constant contact with him, his mother and the employer.”
Luke remarked, “Job Coach Scott made me feel comfortable, he was relatable and provided support when needed.”
Scott also said, “I am very happy and excited that Luke found a job so quickly after finishing his education.”
