“Everyone has stated that I’m much happier and more energised since I started working. I enjoy driving buses, meeting the regular passengers, and having a regular routine.” Gordon, Bus Driver, NSW

Prior to meeting the atWork Australia Ryde team, Gordon struggled to find work for approximately eight months due to anxiety and depression. Gordon then met his Disability Employment Services Job Coach Zoe and said his attitude changed from “Please hire me I’m useless,” to feelings of genuine excitement at the prospect of work.

Zoe and the team at atWork Australia’s North Ryde office worked with Gordon to come up with ideas for work – work that would inspire and excite Gordon, work that would make the most of Gordon’s friendly and welcoming nature. Zoe and Gordon met weekly, checked in regularly, and Zoe discussed Gordon’s strengths and skills with various companies. “I saw firsthand Gordon’s confidence growing. Gordon became more optimistic about finding work,” Zoe said.

Gordon went to a few job interviews however the jobs didn’t feel right. “Nothing seemed to be just right,” Gordon said. “Zoe then suggested bus driving and I was excited at the prospect.” Zoe supported Gordon through the interview process with the bus company, and was very proud when he got the job. “Gordon was very excited when I called and told him he got the job, as were we at the office. Gordon has come a long way,” Zoe said.

Gordon is settling into his new job as a part-time trainee bus operator very well, and says that “having a job has really helped improve my mental health. Everyone has stated how I am much happier and more energised since I started working.”

Zoe has thoroughly enjoyed watching Gordon settle into his role, “he makes for a very merry bus driver and I hear his regular passengers look forward to greeting him each day. I’m truly excited for Gordon and his new lease on life,” Zoe said.
