Graham is visually impaired and relies on the use of a cane and other supports to get around. The past few years have been tough for the 57-year-old, who has been looking for work since 2017. On top of this, the COVID pandemic hit in 2020, which made job hunting seem even more difficult.

Graham approached atWork Australia Bateman’s Bay in 2020 to get some support finding the perfect role for him. He was connected to Disability Employment Services Job Coach Megan, who immediately clicked with Graham and saw the potential that he possessed.

Megan could see that Graham was low on confidence, and she was determined to keep him motivated, aware that the perfect job was out there waiting for him. She worked with him on job coaching and mentoring, which involved developing a plan for him to follow to secure his ideal role.

Megan helped him identify key skills, any relevant experience he had and what he wanted to achieve in work and life. She also spent time developing his natural abilities so he could hit the ground running once he secured employment. In this case, it was clear that Graham was good at problem solving, and very practical.

After working with Megan, Graham was referred to Employer Engagement Consultant Jye, who approached the local McDonald’s to see if they had any vacancies. Jye has a good working relationship with McDonald’s having worked with them before to support atWork Australia clients.

Graham was thrilled when McDonalds offered him a role as a cleaner and maintenance person, a role that catered to his natural abilities. He was excited and nervous to start his new role but atWork Australia supported him by supplying work-related clothing and shoes, as well as a smart, new haircut, so he was prepared for his first day.

Graham has thrived since joining McDonald’s, and he says he’s “looking forward” to the challenges that the role brings. He thanked Megan and Jye for their hard work in finding him a role that suited him and for giving him back his confidence.

Megan reiterated how proud she is of Graham. She also spoke of how happy she is with the role that teamwork played in supporting Graham’s recovery.

She said: “I’m so excited for Graham, and I’m so happy that Jye and I worked as a team to create this opportunity for Graham. To see how he’s thrived since starting his job is just wonderful, and I couldn’t be prouder of the work he has done and how far he has come.”
