Herson commenced with atWork Australia in December 2021 and was introduced to his Job Coach, Leanne. He is a client of the Disability Employment Services program and he has been trying hard to build his knowledge and skills; attending TAFE SA to learn about computers and basic technology.

Unemployed for 13-months, Herson found his appointments with Leanne very valuable. He loved coming into the office; challenging himself to add the appointments into his phone as a reminder and sometimes dropping in weekly to use the office computers.

Herson was reliant on public transport, however, had become very good at knowing which train and bus he needed to catch. This was a barrier for Herson, along with waiting on the Royal Adelaide Hospital on a date for surgery.

By connecting with Leanne regularly, Herson’s confidence began to grow. Herson was patient with the process and Leanne was confident he would find something he likes to do for work.

After discussing Herson’s goals and aspirations with Employer Engagement Consultant, Amber, Herson was invited for an interview at the Gawler Arm Hotel.

When Herson found out he’d secured casual employment as a Kitchen Hand, he visited the office to see Leanne and was very excited. Leanne and Herson sat down together and they discussed what Herson would need to be able to start. Leanne was able to help Herson financially with new clothes and aprons for work. Leanne had also bought Herson a new phone; he cried when he got the phone as this meant he could speak with his mother in Spain.

Herson had a trial with his employer on a Wednesday and started straight after.

A few weeks after starting work, Herson dropped into the office to report his work hours and brought a lovely card for Leanne to thank her for her patience and the help she has given.

Leanne says, I am sorry to see Herson leave, however, I’m extremely proud to be part of changing Herson’s life.
