There is a common question that leaves many people scratching their head: How do you motivate the unmotivated? There is no simple answer to this question, it takes time, patience and most importantly, someone who believes in you.
When Josh first came to atWork Australia’s Workforce Australia office in Gawler, SA, he had been long-term unemployed and lacked motivation. In the beginning, Josh would rarely attend his appointments and he was very disengaged. Fortunately for Josh, his Job Coach, Joanne, was not going to give up on him.
Joanne wanted Josh to take responsibility for his employment journey; as a starting point, Joanne made Josh accountable for attending each of his appointments and began teaching him how he could meet his monthly requirements.
Once they had established regular engagement, Joanne suggested a variety of opportunities for Josh to upskill and increase his employment options. Joanne referred Josh to a local jobs program with SYC. Through this initiative, Josh enrolled into a Certificate II in Construction. This was a turning point for Josh, he loved the course and the new skills he was learning. He attended the entire eight-week program.
Now, Josh has completed his course, and with the support of his Job Coach, Joanne, they set small achievable goals to help Josh progress towards employment. atWork Australia supported Josh to secure his White Card, Police Check and his First Aid qualification.
Josh’s motivation and outlook towards finding employment had completely changed. Soon enough, Josh secured a position as a Recycling Laborer. In preparation to start work, atWork Australia were able to provide additional funding for Josh to purchase Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), transport assistance and a new phone. Josh’s Job Coach, Joanne, said, “Josh came into the office the other day and he had a smile from ear to ear. He was so happy to be working.”
Josh has made incredible progress since coming to atWork Australia. He has gone from rarely attending his appointments, to being full of confidence and back in the workforce.
