Jennifer, from Jacana, Victoria, lives with emphysema, a lung condition that causes shortness of breath, the ongoing feeling of not being able to get enough air, and a long-term cough.

After moving to Victoria from Queensland, Jennifer found herself without a job. Despite being unemployed for three months, she was determined to find a role that suited her needs and would allow her to start building a career.

Jennifer turned to atWork Australia’s Bundoora branch for Disability Employment Services support. She was referred to Job Coach Mark, who immediately got to work finding out more about Jennifer and what type of employment she wanted.

Jennifer was low on confidence having spent three months unemployed, but Mark helped her search for jobs that suited her skillset and experience. It became clear that she was a very methodical thinker, and a job in administration would suit her perfectly.

Mark worked with Jennifer to upgrade her resumé and cover letter so it was up to date and relevant to the jobs she was applying for. This also included adding skills and experience that Jennifer had that were previously missing from her resumé that would appeal to employers.

Before long, Jennifer was offered an interview as a part-time receptionist and administrator. She was nervous before the interview, but Mark helped settle her nerves by going over mock interview questions. A short time after her interview, Jennifer was contacted and told she was being offered the job. It’s been almost a year since Jennifer started working for her new employer, and she’s still loving it.

Jennifer says, “I can’t thank Mark and the atWork Australia team enough for the support they have given me. I was over the moon when I heard I had been given a job interview, and even more thrilled when I found out I was successful. My journey is ongoing, and I’m looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead, especially with the confidence that atWork Australia has given me.”

Mark says, “Jennifer was a pleasure to work with. She was determined to find a job role that suited her needs, and she was willing to put in the effort to land that role. It didn’t surprise me that she was offered a job so quickly, and I’ve no doubt that she will continue to impress her employer as much as she impressed us.”
