Brendan was interested in building his career as a Support Worker. He wanted to do something which helped other people.
When he came to atWork Australia’s Marrickville office as a Workforce Australia client, Brendan had lost his motivation.
He had applied for so many jobs at this point and hadn’t made any progress. Through previous experience, he had little trust that anyone could help him find what he was looking for.
Brendan met Job Coach, Bill and it took some time to get to know each other. As they spent more time together talking about Brendan’s goals and work history, Brendan started to trust Bill more.
He started speaking more openly about his barriers to work and his goals, including his dream of working as a Support Worker.
He expressed he wasn’t interested in short term work just to meet requirements, as he felt it took him further away from his goal.
Job Coach Bill, together with Brendan, co-designed a plan to take small steps towards Brendan’s goal.
They started with the basic checks needed for the industry such as the Working with Children Check, NDIS Check and a basic first aid course.
During this time, Brendan learned that Bill was here to help him get to his goal and appreciated working in partnership.
They updated his resume with each step, and Bill coached Brendan on interviewing for Support Worker positions.
“I understood where Brendan was at in his journey to employment. I worked patiently with him, step by step, towards his goal,” said Bill.
Brendan was successful in a role as Support Worker and has just passed three months in sustainable and meaningful employment.
“This role has made an immense difference in Brendan’s life. He is looking forward to helping himself financially and has improved his well-being, doing a role he enjoys supporting people,” said Bill.
