Michael worked as an IT professional for more than 25 years when his health deteriorated. He was living with depression and a thyroid condition when he also had a heart attack. Michael had been unemployed for 10 years, so when he came to atWork Australia, the team thought the Jobs Now program would be a good fit.
When Job Coach, Sebastian, from atWork Australia’s Wanneroo office in Western Australia met Michael, he realised he could benefit from our Jobs Now program which helps clients prepare for entering employment.
“The Jobs Now program is great for someone who has been out of work for a while. It is also great for our clients with mental health conditions as it helps you feel more confident and supported before you start interviews,” said Sebastian.
The Jobs Now program is based on a client-centered approach with facilitators who are welcoming and where clients feel heard, and their opinions are valued. The program runs for 90 minutes a week for five weeks and, along with coaching, helps clients back into a schedule and engage with others.
“In addition to the program, I supported Michael with coaching and interview preparation and provided him with strategies to manage his mental health in the workplace.”
“It took some time but with support, Michael was ready to return to employment. The coaching and preparation helped,” said Sebastian.
Michael is now working in a local call centre. atWork Australia also helped Michael with shoes and professional clothes he could wear to work.
