At 26-years-old, Josh had been unemployed for almost a year when he was connected to atWork Australia in Bairnsdale, Victoria.
A Disability Employment Services client, Josh lives with ADHD and health conditions which resulted in major surgery.
Josh was shy and quiet when he first connected with Job Coach David, after having had a poor experience with employers in the past.
His past experiences, along with the stress of trying to understand what he was meant to be doing with Centrelink, was adding to his anxieties around seeking work.
“My first few meetings with Josh were centered around just getting to know him and helping him to understand how Centrelink worked with his mutual obligations,” said Job Coach David.
“Josh was resistant to return to work because of his past experiences. However, through continued encouragement, coaching and support, and giving Josh lots of information, he gradually gained confidence and motivation to start looking for work.”
Just when Josh was starting to gain some traction in his job seeking efforts, he had to have major surgery.
Soon after his surgery, Josh landed an interview as a retail sales assistant.
“Only three weeks after Josh had surgery, he came into the office with a big smile on this face to gleefully inform me he had been successful in obtaining a role. He was excited to have control over his future,” said David.
“He was shy when he first came in to see me. Now he is a confident man who is eagerly seeking the next challenge in life, to build himself a strong future.”
Josh recently celebrated three months in meaningful employment and is maintaining his enthusiasm and engagement.
“I am so proud of Josh; he has inspired me so much. To see Josh overcome such odds and to be where he is now is incredible. His hard work and willingness to give things a go should be an inspiration to others,” said David.
Josh said understanding Centrelink better helped him with his anxiety. Josh said “David was a safe and positive constant while I was going through tough times. I am so remarkably overwhelmed by how much I’ve achieved in the last year.”
