Karen had only been a client of atWork Australia’s Workforce Australia office in Drysdale, Victoria, for three weeks before she secured a new job, providing her with a fresh start.

Karen has spent majority of her life as a stay-at-home mum, while she was busy raising her four daughters. Karen decided it was time to do something for herself and wanted to return to the workforce. However, Karen was feeling stuck and did not believe she had the skills to find employment. Karen is sixty-five years old, while she feels young at heart, she believed this would be another barrier to employment. This is when Karen reached out to atWork Australia for support.

When Karen met her Job Coach, Daina, she reassured her that she was more than capable of finding employment. Daina told Karen that she has skills that many employers would desire.  With atWork Australia’s guidance, she would find a job in no time.

Karen always came to the office with a positive attitude and was prepared to take on a new challenge. Karen said, “A lot of people at my age are afraid of change, not me.” Karen’s Job Coach, Daina, could see how eager she was to find work. Daina invited Karen to atWork Australia’s hub day, First Steps to Success. First Steps to Success days bring together a wide variety of local employers in one location. This is an opportunity for atWork Australia clients to network, build connections and see what opportunities are on offer. Karen was able to meet many new employers and gathered information on positions they had available.

Karen had a great discussion with Michael, from Calibre Group, which led to her securing a position as a Front of House Worker across multiple locations. Karen was thrilled with the opportunity and was very excited to start work. Karen’s Job Coach, Daina, said, “Karen has built confidence in herself with job searches and not letting her age or limited skills stop her from pushing on.”

Karen is very happy in her new job. Karen said, “I feel like in a way I am helping other people by showing kindness and showing them, it is never too late to do what you love or learn new things.”

“the hub day was an excellent method of meeting new employers in a casual environment. It was nice to be face to face with employers, the old school way,” said Karen.
