When Karen came to atWork Australia’s office in the Southern Ranges, NSW, she had spent the previous five years predominantly unemployed.
Karen had a few odd jobs during this period, however, due to her health barriers, these positions were not long-term. Karen’s biggest barrier to employment was a back injury, which made some of the simplest tasks extremely difficult. However, this did not stop Karen; she was determined to find suitable employment.
Karen’s Job Coach, Renee, said, “When I first met Karen she was very shy and was unsure how atWork Australia would be able to support her. As she had no formal training, she was very self-conscious about her ability to do anything.”
Renee supported Karen with fortnightly appointments, providing encouragement, guidance, support and lots of praise as Karen took steps towards reaching her goals. The support, guidance and praise provided by Renee has really helped with Karen’s self-esteem and confidence.
After lots of support and encouragement from Renee, Karen has now found enjoyable long-term employment at the Tahmoor Post Office. Renee said, “Employment has helped Karen with her self-esteem, self-belief, attitude and finances. Karen is receiving on-the-job training and she is happy in her new role. Karen is feeling so much better about herself”.
Karen is now reaping the benefits of work, she said,” Having now been employed for two weeks, the difference is amazing. Having more financial freedom and knowing that I will not have to constantly worry about paying bills when they come in. It truly is such a blessing.
