Karen, a proud Indigenous woman, had been unemployed for two years when she was connected with the Workforce Australia team at atWork Australia in Mount Druitt, NSW.
She arrived with the hope to get back to work as quickly as possible.
Karen was, at first, reluctant to share her barriers, but after working closely with Job Coach, Shumaila, she felt comfortable to disclose that she lives with mental health conditions and has some financial barriers.
Shumaila shared the support available to her, including how atWork Australia could support with any financial costs of obtaining work.
Job Coach, Shumaila, also provided encouragement to Karen based on her past work experience, highlighting her skills and achievements.
They worked together to update her resume and Shumaila started marketing Karen to Indigenous employers in the local area.
Karen landed a role working as an Indigenous and Social Inclusion Advisor at CPB Contracting.
Karen believed she would be able to perform very well in this role and she felt confident in her abilities.
However, she felt a little anxious about completing all the paperwork required as part of the on-boarding process.
Shumaila was on hand to assist Karen fill in her paperwork, supporting her to start in her new role.
atWork Australia also supported Karen to purchase the work-related clothing she would need for the role.
Karen has recently attended the atWork Australia Mount Druitt office, but this time not as a client.
She attended as a guest speaker for CPB Contracting to support other atWork Australia Indigenous clients and share some roles on offer.
