Karina came to atWork Australia for help to find work, having moved from Sydney to the Shoalhaven area of NSW two years ago with her family.
Arriving into her new home town, Karina was frustrated as she could not find work and had been without a job for two years. Karina has an intellectual disability, and so partnering with atWork Australia’s Disability Employment Services meant she was matched with her Job Coach Fiona, and together Fiona and Karina would find Karina good, local work.
The first step was determining Karina’s goals for work. Karina and Fiona then worked together on job searching, and Fiona approached several businesses that appealed to Karina, highlighting Karina’s abilities and putting her forward for different roles.
A casual position became available in the Front of House team at the local RSL, Karina was very interested in the role. Karina went for the job and was invited to work a shift, to ensure the fit was right for both Karina and the RSL. Karina was excited but nervous, as she hadn’t worked in over two years. To support Karina settle into her new role, Fiona joined Karina on her first shift.
Karina impressed her employers instantly and was rostered onto shifts. Karina felt absolutely over the moon, finding a job that makes her very happy, a job that she does very well. Karina is also feeling grateful for her new job, “I’m so happy, having my own income again is great and I love working with such a nice team,” Karina said.
Karina impressed her new workplace so much so that they offered her a promotion, from casual employment to permanent part-time employment, all within weeks of commencing her new role! “Karina is a delight. She is always on time, only has to be shown once, and she works very hard,” Mark, Karina’s Manager said.
Fiona, Karina’s Job Coach is very happy with the outcome and is pleased that Karina has now found good, local work, giving her independence and happiness. “I’m delighted to have been able to support Karina to achieve such a positive outcome,” Fiona said.
