Like many others, Disability Employment Services client, Kris, was left without a job after COVID. The bakery he was working in was shut down and the period of unemployment had impacted Kris’s mental health conditions.
He was connected with Job Coach, Tania, at the Umina atWork Australia office in New South Wales for support.
“Kris is a lovely man, always on time for his appointments and very reliable,” said Tania.
Living with mental health conditions, including PTSD, Kris was looking for a specific work environment he knew he could thrive in while managing his mental health.
He was open to different industries, but was looking for something active, something local and ideally with a small business who could get to know him as a person.
As Tania got to know Kris, an employer she had worked with for a while sprang to mind. She asked Kris if production warehousing work interested him, and when he said ‘yes’, she got to work making an introduction.
“I knew if I could get Kris an interview with this employer, that he would shine,” said Tania.
“I called them and told them about Kris. They were excited and very keen to meet him.”
Tania attended the interview with Kris for additional support and was impressed with what she saw.
“He asked lots of questions, was very professional and open about his mental health conditions.”
Those interviewing Kris were also impressed and hired him right away.
Soon after Kris started work, he called Tania to let her know that he found out one of his primary school friends was also working with the company.
With employment, and reconnecting with friends, Kris is feeling more independent, has increased confidence, and is now working towards a new goal – to gain his driving licence.
“Kris feels blessed to be working with great people and feels part of the family business,” said Tania.
