Leo, from Stones Corner in Brisbane is a great example of how a passion can turn into a sustainable career path.
Leo, aged 34 had always been employed prior to injuring his spine in his previous employment as a mechanic. Previously, Leo’s jobs were always physically demanding but he was no longer able to do this type of work as physical work was now challenging, even sitting for a long time.
Leo needed assistance in finding employment which would suit his physical disability and so he contacted atWork Australia.
Leo wanted to become a support worker due to his passion for helping people. Leo had been out of work for a couple of years due to his injury but he had done some volunteer work in support services in the past.
To assist in finding employment, his atWork Australia Job Coach Thomas assisted Leo with writing his resume, interview preparation and searching for jobs together before connecting with his current employer.
atWork Australia organised and paid for the required certificates – a yellow (NDIS support) and blue card (Working with Children Check) and assisted with a course in Community Services and a First Aid Course.
atWork Australia was able to assist him in securing his current new role as a Disability Support Worker with icare where he has been working full-time for three months and supports a range of clients.

Leo says: “There are a lot of people in need of support workers to assist them in their daily lives and I am here to help. It gives me peace of mind knowing that I have a secure job to go to daily where I can help others and learn something new every day.”
