Good news from atWork Australia

When Kim (55) started working with atWork Australia through the Workforce Australia program, she was long-term unemployed, having not worked in over seven years.

From a Vietnamese background, Kim was offered an interpreter for her first session with atWork Australia but once she met Job Coach Luna, she felt comfortable enough to use her appointments to practice her English skills.

Luna took the time to get to know Kim. Kim expressed to Luna she didn’t understand how to look for work and felt her age and language skills were barriers for her.

She told Luna her goal was to work in a restaurant but after looking for work for over seven years, she was lacking motivation.

Together they worked on a tailored plan of achievable small goals to help Kim reach her overall goal of restaurant work.

Luna quickly learnt that Kim did not understand how the Workforce Australia system worked, nor how to access Workforce Australia online.

“I started with one-on-one coaching with Kim to teach her how to download the Workforce Australia app, showed her step-by-step how to access the system and how to add and report on the Points Based Activation System,” said Luna.

Setting up Workforce Australia for Kim was the first small goal. This achievement helped Kim start to feel positive about her journey to employment.

“We then worked on Kim’s resume, and she learnt how to market herself to potential employers,” said Luna.

“We started phoning local employers, and Kim was able to build her confidence.”

Slowly she started to approach employers to market her skill set, with the assistance of Job Coach Luna.

Kim was successful and managed to get an interview at a local café. The employer was impressed with Kim’s determination, persistence, and enthusiasm saying, ‘Workplace training can be tough, but work ethic and enthusiasm are very hard to come by’.

“Kim’s new employer said they look for people who are confident, determined, and show initiative over skills and experience,” said Luna.

Kim has now transformed her outlook on life, realising her barriers have nothing to do with her capabilities to work and be successful in achieving her goals.

Kim expressed her gratitude at how well atWork Australia worked with her to provide a service that suited her needs. She is now receiving In-Work Support from the atWork Australia Chester Hill, NSW team.
