Mark is achieving his career goals having found an employer who is willing to support him as he learns the ropes.

From Coodanup, south-east of Mandurah in WA, Mark lives with an intellectual disability and he needs support to learn new things and new workplace tasks.

At 26, he is unable to read or write and had no formal certificates or qualifications. Mark would often get frustrated with his inability to complete tasks and this also affected his mental health.

Mark, who doesn’t have a driver’s licence, needed to find work locally so he could remain independent and ride his push bike from where he lives with his parents.

He was referred to the Mandurah office of atWork Australia where he was introduced to Job Coach, Alynka.

Alynka recognised that Mark had never really focussed on future career goals as he felt his disability was a barrier to finding meaningful employment. Together they worked through those thoughts and talked about the support available to Mark.

Through their meetings, Alynka discovered Mark was very proud of his Dad and would love to follow in his footsteps and work in the Civil Construction industry.

With this in mind, Alynka enrolled Mark in atWork Australia’s Jobs Now program, to give him good grounding in working with people and interview techniques.

Alynka also enrolled Mark into a Certificate III in Civil Construction which, with supported learning and assistance, he has successfully completed.

Now that Mark had his qualification, Alynka contacted local employers in the Civil Construction industry, marketing his new skills along with the advantages of employing candidates through atWork Australia.

It wasn’t long before Mark found work labouring, learning plant operations and putting his newfound skills to work.

Alynka says Mark was surprised and very happy about his new role, and very proud to be working in the same industry as his Dad.

Now that Mark has a steady income he says, “My first goal is to save up and buy a car.”
