In November 2022, Melisa walked into atWork Australia’s Bendigo office to get support from the Disability Employment Service team. She was determined to return to work after eight years of unemployment, as she was busy raising her family. Melisa was ready to return to work and eager to contribute to the family income, however, she just needed some support and guidance to navigate her way back into the workplace.
Melisa lives with an intellectual disability and when she met her Job Coach, Kylie, she explained that she was looking for extra support to build her confidence to engage with employers. She also wanted support to identify suitable positions, someone to advocate on her behalf and also help address the concerns she had about her ability to learn a new role and understand processes. In the beginning, due to her learning barriers, Melisa had a lot of self-doubt, however, kylie reassured her that she was going to be there to support her throughout her entire employment journey.
Kylie began supporting Melisa through the process of finding suitable employment. Once they had identified a suitable role, Kylie coached Melisa to prepare for the interview. Melisa was overjoyed to learn she had been successful and secured a position as a Food Packer. Kylie continued supporting Melisa in the lead up to her start date, ensuring Melisa was feeling comfortable and new that she was not alone and that atWork Australia would be there every step of the way.
Melisa is thriving in her new job, every day she continues to build her confidence in her own ability. Melisa’s Job Coach, Kylie, said, “Melisa has become really confident and independent within her work environment, and she is a valued member of the team.”
Melisa was incredibly happy with this outcome. Her confidence continues to grow, and she has found a job that suits her lifestyle and allows her to earn extra income to support her young family. Melisa said, “I have so much more confidence and I feel positive about my future.”
