Milad was no different. When the 39-year-old from Liverpool in south-west Sydney was referred to his local branch of atWork Australia, he didn’t expect to find work. Having a criminal history meant he’d been looking for 12 months already, with no luck, and his depression only made things worse.
Like her other clients, Yvette told Milad there was something for everyone, no matter their history.
Despite initial resistance, Yvette was committed to supporting Milad. She was used to varying her pace, depending on the needs of her clients. She worked steadily with him every week, to define his goals and develop a plan to reach them.
A job soon came up as a store person with a great local employer. Yvette helped Milad apply for the role and he was fortunate enough to be offered the position. She then continued to support him after he started, motivating him to continue working hard.
Milad would call Yvette every day to discuss the job, during each phone call she was quick to reassure and motivate Milad and keep him as positive as possible.
Now, after a few months Milad loves his job and is so happy he stayed. He really didn’t think anyone would hire him, given his criminal record and mental illness.
“Being employed once again has given me my dignity back. Yvette kept assisting me, even when I wasn’t confident, which enabled me to remain working, for which I am very grateful,” Milad says.
Yvette says her job can often be challenging but that’s why she loves it.
“Sometimes you just need to stay positive and help people, even if they don’t want to be helped, and never lose hope,” she says.
