Good news from atWork Australia.

Melanie had been participating in volunteer work. In September 2022, she decided it was time to return to paid employment and to start getting rewarded for her hard work.

Melanie walked into atWork Australia’s Payneham office in South Australia and advised the team she was eager to return to work. However, she was looking for support to assist her on the journey.

Melanie has lived experience of mental health, including Schizophrenia. She was afraid to disclose her medical conditions to potential employers, as she feared she would be overlooked for positions. Melanie advised her Job Coach, Lea-An, that she wanted to utilise her previous skills as a Lifestyle Attendant, to work in a similar role in the community.

Melanie was supported to explore all potential career opportunities and was encouraged to attend atWork Australia’s hub day at the Salisbury office. atWork Australia’s hubs provide opportunities for people to engage with a wide range of employers, to learn about their business and opportunities they can offer. Melanie’s Job Coach, Lea-An, supported her at the hub to obtain information and connect with employers.

Together, Melanie and Lea-An discussed the possibility of a Disability Support Worker role. Lea-An then referred Melanie to atWork Australia’s Employer Engagement team, who referred Melanie to a number of vacancies in this industry.

Melanie was successful in landing a position as a Disability Support Worker with Komplete Care. This role allows her to put her skills to use, supporting people in their homes and in the community with daily activities and tasks. Lea-An said, “Melanie was keen and eager to hit the ground running on her employment journey and the results really speak for themselves.”

This was a great team effort; supporting Melanie to achieve her goal of finding paid employment.

Melanie said, “I felt fully supported from day one. The team bent over backwards and could not do enough for me. I very much appreciate the support and would highly recommend to anyone.”
