Omar dreams of working as a Radiologist in Australia

Omar trained and worked as a Consultant Radiologist for many years and was surprised when he was unable to start working in the same field upon arrival in Australia. Coming from Iraq originally, Omar and his family came to Australia as refugees from Jordan almost a year ago.

“I was quite depressed and upset when I first realised I couldn’t practice medicine straight away,” said Omar.

Omar was referred via the jobactive program and then contacted by Jacqui Luff, atWork Australia’s Career Pathways Pilot Program Coordinator.

“It honestly felt like Jacqui saved my life,” said a very grateful Omar. “Jacqui is one of the best people I have met because of the personal encouragement and guidance she has given me. I feel very lucky to have the support from this program to help me achieve my dream of working as a doctor in Australia.”

The Career Pathways Pilot for Humanitarian Entrants is a new Australian Government initiative to help refugees who have a profession or trade skills, and/or qualifications find employment opportunities in Australia. Adjusting to life in a new country can be a great challenge and this program recognises and values the skills and experience that refugees bring with them.

“Omar is an experienced Radiologist who is extremely motivated to return to his profession in Australia, so we are excited to work with him to get his qualifications recognised here,” said Jacqui. “Omar is very driven and wants to become a contributing member of the community.”

atWork Australia has provided Omar with career counselling, assistance to pay for expenses associated with having his medical credentials recognised, and English tuition that helped him pass the required English language assessment. atWork Australia has also supported him through the lengthy process of having his qualifications verified, and has facilitated meetings with medical professionals who have provided advice and guidance to Omar.

“It is so important to me that I can work as a doctor in Australia and be able to serve the people in my new community,” said Omar. “It is what I am trained to do and what I love to do.”
