Christopher started working with the Disability Employment Services team at the atWork Australia office in Redbank Plains, Ipswich, QLD.
At 29 years of age, Christopher had little work experience except for his volunteer work at the RSPCA.
When he started with atWork Australia he had low confidence in himself, and that he could find suitable work due to his physical disability and mental health, including anxiety.
“Christopher started with us as a shy person. After coaching, and conversations with his Job Coach, he began to come out of his shell,” said Christopher’s In-Work Support Coach Laine.
The team worked with Christopher to tailor his service and his journey to employment. They spoke with him about his employment goals and worked with him and with his barriers.
They worked together resume building, practicing mock interviews and the team supported Christopher financially with obtaining interview clothes along with fuel to get to and from interviews.
“We worked on changing Christopher’s mindset by helping him focus on what he can do. Looking at his strengths helped him gain confidence,” said Laine.
“Once interviews and job trials began to start coming in, Christopher’s confidence grew further.”
He also completed an RSA and soon landed a role as a Bar and Gaming staff member in a local venue.
“Christopher’s reaction was priceless, he could not believe that he had the ability to obtain the role. The team explained that he in fact had it in him the whole time, and all he needed was help to identify his strengths. It was these strengths that helped secure the role.”
Christopher then moved into our In-Work Support program and continued to receive support and encouragement from the atWork Australia team during his first year at work.
After 36 weeks of employment, Christopher has gained a well-deserved promotion from Bar and Gaming staff to Manager of Venue. A true testament of his hard work and determination.
“Determination and hard work have led me to where I am today. My promotion to Manager of Venue was not possible without my support network. I have found new confidence that I never knew existed. Thank you,” said Christopher.
