With a history of inconsistent work, and minimal computer skills, 57-year-old Indigenous client, Malcome, found it difficult to seek work independently. To achieve his goals of entering employment, he sought assistance from the atWork Australia team in Midland, WA.
Upon entering the Workforce Australia office, he was met with the local friendly team, Job Coach Paul, Indigenous Connections Mentor Johanne, and Employer Engagement Consultant Jess. Unknown to Malcome at the time, they would later prove to be the perfect team for him and his goals.
As a first step on his journey, Jess invited Malcome to attend the Jobs for the Mob program. During the program he learnt about SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) goals. “These sessions also were a great opportunity for us to get to know Malcome, and his goals.” said Jess.
“Malcome was searching for outdoor work that allowed him to be physically active.”
After hearing more about his goals, and his history, Paul was able to tailor his journey. This included resume building, interview preparation as well as financial support via various vouchers, such as fuel, food and clothing.
After attending an interview with a local indigenous employer for a landscaping role, and securing the position, Malcome could not wait to share the good news with the atWork Australia team.
“They got me the exact job I wanted” Said Malcome.
