Julie struck lucky when she joined atWork Australia and finally found work that’s flexible and suits her lifestyle and abilities.
After having no luck trying many avenues to find work, Julie, 48, took a chance on atWork Australia, visiting her local Liverpool office in south-west Sydney earlier this year. The Lurnea resident hadn’t worked full-time since having a child more than 20 years previously and felt her lack of qualifications, age and health problems were all working against her.
Job Coach Yvette says Julie had understandably nearly given up after so long, and her priority was boosting her motivation to give job-hunting another go.
“I had to keep reminding Julie that we would find something and not to lose hope,” she says.
Once the pair had updated Julie’s resume and discussed suitable job vacancies, they arranged for her to obtain a police check, which many employers now require. They discussed the possibility of Julie taking on a role as a cleaner, which would provide some flexibility with hours.
With both heart and thyroid conditions, many employers had been wary of employing Julie. But Yvette was determined to come through for her. As soon as the right job came up she referred Julie to the employer who was happy to take her on board.
The work came up just in the nick of time because Julie had only told Yvette the previous day that she’d had enough and didn’t want to participate anymore. Since then, Yvette has stayed in daily contact as part of atWork Australia’s post-placement support service to sort out any issues that may arise.
Yvette says Julie was “over the moon” when she heard she had the job and is so grateful because she now has all the support she needs.
Julie is now working and taking care of herself, as well as having regular check-ups.
“Everything is possible at any age,” Yvette says.
