When Ricky came to atWork Australia he had a limited employment history. Unfortunately, due to Ricky’s health barriers, he had found it difficult to secure employment opportunities throughout his life. Ricky voluntarily walked into atWork Australia’s Penrith, NSW, office to get support from the Disability Employment Service team. Ricky’s willingness to ask for help was about to pay off, as he had just taken his first step towards securing employment.
Ricky lives with an intellectual disability; he has endurance limitations and requires significant on-the-job support. Soon after commencing with atWork Australia, Ricky was able to secure a position as a Cleaner. Once Ricky had started employment, he was introduced to his In-Work Support Coach, Teika. Ricky and Teika quickly developed a great working relationship which provided Ricky with the support he needed to be successful in his new job.
Due to Ricky’s health condition, he had difficulty with his memory and learning new tasks. Teika worked with Ricky to help build his confidence and she was able to create simple, but detailed procedure list and check list that Ricky could follow step-by-step to ensure he completed all of his tasks at a high standard. As a result of Ricky’s hard work and Teika’s consistent support, Ricky has recently celebrated his fifty-two-week milestone in his job, which is an outstanding achievement. Additionally, Teika continues to mentor Ricky and help with training when he is required to learn new tasks. Also, atWork Australia has been able to support Ricky financially, helping him to purchase work clothing and be prepared for work.
Ricky continues to thrive at work and his confidence to engage with his colleagues is growing stronger. Ricky said, “atWork Australia’s support has made a positive impact on my life. The consistent support and compassion makes me feel safe and comfortable.”
