With his Ford Festiva filled with all his belongings, Robin (57) made the trip from Victoria to South Australia for a fresh start. Within his travels, he came across Port Pirie, a place he would later call home.
After re-locating, Robin was searching for a new job and needed some assistance. So, he entered the Workforce Australia office in Port Pirie.
Upon entering, he was met with his Job Coach, Steven. Within his first consultation, Steven got to know Robin and what had brought him to South Australia. Robin expressed he moved interstate to remove himself from a bad situation and was looking for a fresh start. As a result, he was living out of his car.
As a first point of call, Steven worked with a local hotel to source a safe place where he can take a hot shower, and wash clothing. Steven also informed him of all the support groups and food banks within the area for further support.
Robin also expressed that he has no formal identification other than an expired Driver’s License. This was also something that the pair worked on together.
Robin was determined to get into employment and entered the office every day to job search, even when he did not have a scheduled appointment. When Steven was not in other appointments, he would assist in any way he could. This support included developing and enhancing his resume, cover letter as well as interview skills to impress potential employers.
The local hotel could see the potential in Robin and as a result offered him casual employment to get him on his feet. But he did not need this for long, as after several interviews, he was successful in obtaining a full-time position as a salesman.
