The term ‘work ethic’ gets thrown around a lot. It is a well-worn phrase that we see frequently in resumes and cover letters, but it is often not substantiated by the individual’s performance. But this is not the case for DES client, Saeb. By all accounts, from the reams of commendations and praise that he receives from industry professionals, he exemplifies the term.

Known as being the first one to arrive and the last to leave, presenting well and always with a smile, he is praised by organisations across his region.

However, this was not always the case for Saeb.

Living with an experience of physical limitations that restrict movement has resulted in long-term unemployment and in addition, his constraints were compounded by some misfortunes of his past.

However, Saeb consulted with atWork Australia’s Zetland office and connected with Disability Employment Services’ Job Coach, Chelsea. Together they had open discussions about his barriers and potential employment opportunities that were available to him.

Chelsea recognised Saeb’s potential yet also acknowledged the real limitations that Saeb would possibly face in a workplace. They created a job plan and sent him for as many job vacancies as possible.

It was established that Saeb was eligible to enrol into education and regardless of his age, he agreed to partake in a Business Certificate III and upskill to become more eligible to potential employers. He was regarded as one of the most knowledgeable students, particularly with Work Health and Safety. He displayed great passion and commitment.

With Saeb’s rejuvenated outlook, he was able to secure employment as a cleaner with a reputable local company where the management of his condition is made easier due to the autonomy that he has been granted.

Saeb’s Job Coach Chelsea remarked, “It has been great to be a part of Saeb’s journey, when I first met with Saeb, he showed me that he was determined to overcome his barriers. Saeb had a tough start in life and through his experiences he was led to our support at atWork Australia”.
