Said is a mature age client from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background. He was eager to find employment; however, his age and computer literacy were barriers he was finding difficult to overcome on his own.
Said attended his initial appointment in December 2022 and was connected with his Job Coach, Bill. Over the weeks, Said and Bill built rapport and Said started to feel secure to be able to speak about his background and barriers. He advised that he lived alone here in Australia.
Said told Bill that he was unable to job-search effectively on the computer, so relied on the more traditional methods via phone and referrals from friends. Said also needed support from Bill using the online Points Based Activation System for reporting his job searches.
Bill recognised that he would be able to assist Said by helping him to apply for roles, talking to employers and advocating on Said’s behalf. Together, they worked on job interview preparation so that Said would feel confident presenting himself to the employer at an interview.
Said was successful in securing an interview with Bill’s help and landed a role as a Delivery Driver. Said was thankful to have been given the opportunity.
Bill said it was important to engage and motivate Said along the journey to employment and has noticed his self-advancement and personal growth.
Said told Bill, “I am thankful for the service and support, it has made an immense difference in my life and to my well-being”.
It was important to Bill to work with Said to co-design a job-plan that was tailored to the support he needed to gain confidence and progress towards employment.
