"Working has made me realise my mental health can't control me anymore. I have never been more productive and enjoying life as much as I do now working. It has changed my life and has made me more willing to do things that would have otherwise scared me." Samantha DES Client Tasmania

Samantha (24) has never worked before. She lives with anxiety and was too anxious to attend an interview or apply for work. After five months with atWork Australia, Samantha overcame her anxiety and started her first job.

Samantha came to atWork Australia’s Bridgewater office in Tasmania where she was partnered with Job Coach Renee. Renee soon learned Samantha was interested in working in Childcare but wasn’t sure she could commit to the study necessary to obtain a Certificate III.

The Job Coach helped Samantha put together a resume. They worked on coping strategies and calming techniques for her anxiety. Meanwhile, Renee was in the background advocating for Samantha at local childcare centers.

Renee soon discovered Samantha could work with school-aged children without any formal qualifications. She soon had an interview with a local Childcare provider, Discovery.

“To support Samantha, I attended the interview with her. We arrived early and practiced calming techniques before she met with the employer,” said Renee, “they hired Samantha right there on the spot.”

Samantha didn’t believe they had just hired her; she was happy and nervous. Samantha says ‘I highly recommend the atWork Australia Bridgewater team. I have been with them for a few months now and they have already managed to help me find a job that I love. They support me through everything.”

atWork Australia continues to support Samantha in her role and the initial causal role has now transformed into a traineeship.

Working with an inclusive employer has also helped Samantha feel comfortable in the environment. Discovery looks to employ staff with a variety of skills and experiences as they know a diverse workforce is beneficial for the children they look after.

“It has been a pleasure supporting Samantha into the workforce, and now sponsoring her to complete her qualification in early childhood. Samantha has grown in confidence and skills and her opportunities will be endless as she continues to blossom into her preferred profession,” said the Discovery team.

Renee says, “I am incredibly proud of Samantha; she has come so far in the short time I have known her. She was anxious about the interview, but she did well. It makes me so happy to see her succeeding, both personally and professionally.”
