Good news from atWork Australia.

When single mother, Wendy (47), attended her first appointment with her Job Coach, Lek, in Burwood, NSW, her goal was to see her daughter graduate from university and have success in her career. She had worked tirelessly everyday to help make that happen.

For 10-years she had worked in a factory as a Packer. However, as she was getting older, it was becoming harder for her to be on her feet all day due to her health concerns. She wanted to continue working but needed to change the type of work she was doing.

“I really need to change my job, but I fear to change, and I don’t think I have enough confidence to change jobs as I was stuck with a Packer role for too long”, said Wendy.

Wendy and Lek discussed her goals and her barriers; Wendy had a lack of confidence and was fearful of change. Knowing where Wendy’s challenges were enabled Lek to work with her and provide tailored support to suit her needs and goals.

At first, Wendy didn’t believe that she could change jobs to something low impact like office work. However, after a few meetings with Wendy, Lek discovered that she speaks both English and Mandarin, as well as working as a Clerk 10-years ago. This was a strong starting point for Lek to work with Wendy and navigate the way to suitable employment.

Lek’s goal was to work with Wendy and help her realise her talents. They both set forth to begin looking for administration opportunities with a bilingual requirement.

After a few job interviews, Wendy had more confidence and was no longer feeling fear.

Wendy was so outstanding at her last job interview with a Chinese company close to home, she was successful in landing the position as a Clerk with full-time hours.

Lek said, “Having office work will change Wendy’s quality of life and be a big change for her.”

Lek supported Wendy be ready for her new office job by purchasing work clothes and shoes for her.

Lek said, “I met a new Wendy when she came in to visit for an appointment, wearing a smart suit and new loafers. Her personality is shining with her newfound confidence.”

Lek will maintain contact with Wendy to ensure she finds her feet and thrives.

“I really appreciate Lek’s great help! Many thanks for her emotional support that has encouraged me to face the challenge of the new job”, said Wendy.

“Self-confidence is the key to success for Wendy.”
