"Sharyl not only has made a difference in her own life, but she has also changed my life for the better. Working with her has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my entire career and I think she will be an asset to her new employer for many years to come." Kay Job Coach Victoria

Sharyl is vision and hearing impaired. She is a qualified social worker and while looking for a role, she faced judgment and discrimination from employers or found workplaces were not accessible. Sharyl also needed expensive equipment to assist her in any new role.

Sharyl lived in Geelong, Victoria and worked with Job Coach Kay who quickly found Sharyl to be an inspiration.

“Sharyl has been on a long and difficult journey, but she continues to believe in herself and stand up for her rights. I cheer on Sharyl as I’ve found her to be a determined client who is looking for purpose with her employment,” said Kay.

Kay and Sharyl began by working on increasing her confidence after a string of failed applications. They updated her resume, practiced interview skills and atWork Australia provided financial support so Sharyl had a membership to the Australian Association of Social Workers and an updated Police Check.

Kay found Sharyl a great opportunity with an employer who was very inclusive, interested in Sharyl’s skills and abilities, and had an accessible workplace.

“Sharyl called to tell me she got the role, and we were both in tears with excitement. She was very grateful for the assistance provided and for never giving up on her,” said Kay.

Kay then worked with Sharyl to identify what equipment she would need including specialised Envision Glasses, computers, and a mobile phone. atWork Australia also helped Sharyl with moving costs as the role was more than 200km away in Wonthaggi.

Kay is proud of Sharyl’s achievements.
