When Kevin came to atWork Australia, he was 61-years-old, he had been unemployed for ten years, he struggled with literacy and numeracy, and he is now flying into new opportunities and towards a brighter future.
Kevin connected with atWork Australia’s Disability Employment Services team at the Rockingham, WA, office, at a point in his life where he was beginning to think he would never return to work. After ten years of unemployment and not having the ability to read and write, Kevin had low confidence in his ability to apply for jobs. In Kevin’s words, he described his barriers as, “a real headache.”
Kevin was introduced to his Job Coach, Tayla, and the pair immediately began searching for jobs. Tayla supported Kevin to apply for jobs online, teaching him how to navigate various job searching platforms, explaining what information he needed to provide and assisted with reading and writing applications.
Soon enough, Kevin secured an interview for a Trainee Operator position, which would require him to fly-in, fly- out to the Northwest of WA. Kevin was filled with excitement, with the support of his Job Coach, Tayla, the pair fine-tuned his interview skills and developed strong responses to the typical interview questions.
Only a short while ago, Kevin was doubting his ability to find work, so when he got the news that he had been successful, he could barely believe it. Although, the work was not done yet, Kevin still had to complete training and go through the onboarding process. Tayla was able to support Kevin to comprehend and complete the paperwork that was required for the training and onboarding.
Kevin is delighted to be back at work, Kevin, said, “atWork Australia has helped me so much. Starting work again has opened up my mind, I feel alive.”
